Jing Ying Herrington
Samuel Marsden Collegiate School
Service to Chinese Language
Jing Ying joined Samuel Marsden Collegiate School, Karori in 2011 and is deeply passionate about Chinese language learning for young people - achieving exceptional results for her students and school.
In the national Chinese speech competition in 2015 Jing Ying’s students not only came first and second in New Zealand in the senior category but another of her students topped the country in the junior category as well, with the two senior students going on to win the Oceania section at the international competition in China.
Last year largely as a result of Jing Ying’s skill, energy and commitment, Marsden was endorsed by Hanban, the Confucius Institute Headquarters in Beijing as a new Confucius Classroom, a community of global best practice schools for the teaching of Chinese.
Jing Ying actively ensures students have exposure to Chinese culture through a range of external activities which have included:
- participation in the Confucius Institute "Discover China" where students learn Kung Fu, calligraphy, water colour painting and dumpling-making classes
- hosting a performance from China, organised by the Chinese Embassy
- organising a visit to the Throne of Emperors exhibition at Te Papa, yum cha and paper cutting
- students being invited to perform at Parliament as part of celebrations to commemorate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and New Zealand
Jing Ying was also chosen as one of three leaders to take the students to an international summer camp in Beijing and Xiamen organized by the Confucius Institute.
As an outstanding teacher and parents, staff and students are truly appreciative of Jing Ying’s commitment to the promotion of the Chinese language and culture and we honour her outstanding contribution today with a 2016 ISNZ Honours Award for Service to Chinese Language.
