Years: Years 1 to 8 Roll: 104 Principal: Mrs Sandra Hastie Controlling Authority: Saint Kentigern Trust Board Chair: Dr W B Goodfellow Tel: 09 520 1400 Fax: 09 520 7657 Email: admin@sksg.school.nz Web: http://www.saintkentigern.com Address: Our small and friendly school places an emphasis on being an extension of family life; one that understands the importance of maintaining a close relationship between our girls, their families and their place of learning. The involvement of our parents and families in many of the aspects of school life is a vital part of the Saint Kentigern experience. With a reputation for excellence, the benefit of small classes, individual attention and programmes tailored for the specific needs of girls, Saint Kentigern School for Girls – Corran opens a “world of opportunity” for the young people who take their educational journey with us. Spiritual Values With a school community that reflects a variety of cultural and family backgrounds, we encourage the ideal of a Christian community where girls learn and grow in an environment of inclusiveness, mutual respect and care for one another. Whilst Saint Kentigern is affiliated to the Presbyterian Church, our families represent many denominations. Our girls join in worship once a week and each term our families are invited to join their daughters at a chapel service. Above all else, the well being of our girls is paramount and you can expect that your daughter will receive the very best care in a safe and happy school environment. The School provides a high level of pastoral care and this, combined with the values messages explored at Chapel and through Christian education classes, ensures that our girls are educated to become courteous, confident and caring young women. The Learning Pathway With programmes tailored to the specific needs of girls, our mission is to inspire each of the girls in our care to strive for excellence in all areas of endeavour. Setting good habits and establishing self discipline, self esteem and a joy of learning are the keys to their future learning success. The School continues to embrace traditional concepts and skills while emphasising the integrated learning that is central to the knowledge era of the twenty-first century. In addition to their core homeroom subjects, our girls have the benefit of access to specialist facilities for visual art, music, science and technology. Our highly qualified staff are dedicated to assisting girls of all abilities to discover their talents while developing life skills such as problem solving, co-operation and self-management. Our girls are encouraged to participate to the very best of their ability across a broad range of academic, practical, physical and cultural pursuits. Our teaching and learning programmes are challenging, exciting and varied, preparing our girls for an ever-changing world. Our youngest students are taught in an environment full of discovery and wonder, inspired by the philosophy of Reggio Emilia in Years 7-8 It is recognised that students in Years 7 and 8 require specialist programmes in order to prepare them for their secondary school years. As they prepare for this transition, our girls are offered new and varied challenges with a focus on helping them develop study skills, manage their time more independently, and to guide them in the exploration of their individual talents and aptitudes. At this level, our girls are exposed to a wide range of assessment tasks including formal tests and they are well prepared to command advantageous places in secondary schools. Sport and Recreation With a range of individual and team sports that cater for all abilities, our girls are able to explore their personal interests and develop their skills. Through sport, our girls discover the benefits of good health and learn to handle the highs and lows that come with competition. There are also well-established inter-house competitions during the year that encourage friendly inter-house rivalry and a sense of fun. Performing Arts The Performing Arts allow our girls to give expression to their innate creative talents while developing confidence, perseverance and teamwork. Music, dance, speech and drama are popular activities and there are many opportunities for students to become fully engaged. Beyond the Classroom We believe our girls should be challenged and we see enormous benefits in taking them beyond the classroom with qualified instructors and well structured, challenging programmes. Education beyond the classroom takes many forms from cross-curricular field trips to the annual camp for our senior girls. All trips beyond the school gates are planned with the expectation that the girls will be offered opportunities that they may not otherwise have the chance to experience; to acquire firsthand knowledge; to develop independence; to discover self confidence; and to help them find success in the face of new challenges.
