Foundation
Dilworth School was founded in 1894 under the terms of the will of James Dilworth, a pioneer Auckland farmer, banker, and landowner, and opened its doors to the first pupils in 1906. The trust deed requires that candidates for admissions be “orphans or the sons of persons of good character and in straitened circumstances”.

The Founder’s will directed that the trustees were to ensure that boys were “educated and maintained” in order to become “good and useful members of society”. A strong Old Boys’ Association participates actively in school affairs.

The School
Dilworth School operates as one administrative unit, but on two campuses. The Junior Campus accommodates classes from Year 5 to Year 8 in a purpose-built facility with a maximum roll of 192. The Senior Campus caters for secondary classes from Year 9 to Year 13 with a maximum roll of 354.

Worship in St Patrick’s Chapel and in the Junior Campus hall follows the Anglican tradition and is central to school life with compulsory attendance at regular services. The Chaplain, the Principal and other staff conduct services although the boys themselves lead some of them, often composing their own liturgy. There is a strong musical tradition in the school led by the chapel choir.

The Curriculum
With the new facilities at the Junior Campus, and the upgrade of facilities at the Senior Campus, the school has been provided with excellent educational facilities and resources. Technology education has also been developed with a multi-purpose technology and information centre at the Senior Campus.

A broad range of subjects is offered at all levels, and there is regular assessment and reporting to parents. In line with the Christian ethic of the school, all boys attend classes in Christian education. Outdoor education is an important feature of the school. Students are involved in a wide range of activities and community service is encouraged through such activities as The Rotary Club, Kidsline Counselling, and Scouting.

Sporting and Cultural Activities
The school emphasises both sporting and cultural activities. Music has become a very strong tradition within the school and a large number of students have the opportunity to learn musical instruments, and to be involved in choirs, instrumental groups, barbershop quartet and so on. Each campus puts on a full musical production every two years combining with one of the neighbouring girl’s schools. Theatresports, debating, interhouse music and drama competitions are also held. There is an expectation that all students will be involved in sporting activities. A wide variety of sporting activities are available and many participate in the regular interschool competitions. For a small school, many teams and individuals have performed with distinction.

Scholarships and Bursaries
All boys at Dilworth School are the holders of a full tuition and boarding scholarship. Boys are not admitted to the school without the scholarship so there are no fee-paying students at all. Transfer from Junior to Senior Campus is not automatic, and indeed boys must justify continuation of the scholarship at every stage of their education at Dilworth.
