Foundation
The Ficino School was established in 1997 and is situated in Mount Eden, Auckland. Ficino School is affiliated to the London based Independent Education Association. This is a world-wide group of schools supported by the Education Renaissance Trust and dedicated to providing a balanced, whole education founded in the spirit of unity.

"Rejoice in the Present"
The school’s guiding maxim is "Rejoice in the Present", a quotation from its patron, Marsilio Ficino (1943-99), a philosopher and scholar from the Italian Renaissance period. He was a truly spiritual man whose writings embody the practical virtues so necessary to support a perennial education.

The School
Ficino School provides an education that is both traditional and innovative. We aim to provide simple spiritual knowledge, and knowledge of the universe, mankind and the individual’s relation thereto. This is balanced with a practical enquiry into the underlying principles of life. Whilst acknowledging and drawing inspiration from the Christian tradition of our western heritage, we also incorporate the wisdom and learning from other great traditions of the world. This is an education accessible to everyone regardless of upbringing or culture.

Ficino School is in a phase of growth and expansion but has already established a reputation as a happy and effective place for learning.

The Curriculum
The school provides a full range of traditional primary subjects carefully referenced to the National Curriculum, without being defined by it. We use the best possible materials to introduce children to fine and inspiring human endeavours. Physical activities, cultural nourishment, music, dance and drama are an integral part of the education. Reading and writing are taught very fully from a phonics based system. We aim to help children develop a love of literature through the use of Shakespeare, the Bible and other classic works. Mathematics is based on learning tables and facts by heart, and on mental arithmetic, giving confidence and skill. Sanskrit, one of the oldest languages, and origin of many Indo/European languages, is taught from an early age. Its precise grammar and pure phonetic sounds provide a firm base for further language study. Fine music, art and handwriting are prominent in the school.

Physical education is a major curriculum component with the emphasis on co-ordinated and graceful effective action. A full range of sports is introduced including swimming, gymnastics and a variety of ball sports.

In all activities, pupils are encouraged and supported to develop an inner discipline guided by truthfulness, harmlessness, magnanimity and attentiveness as a basis for true character.
