Foundation
From antecedents stretching back to 1842, King’s College was founded in 1896 when Mr Graham Bruce moved from St John’s Collegiate School to the “Tower”, in Remuera Road to become its first headmaster. In 1922, under the aegis of a Board of Governors appointed by the Anglican Church, the secondary department moved to Otahuhu.

The School
King’s College is set in a magnificent site of 30 hectares adjacent to the Auckland Golf Club at Middlemore. The large playing fields immediately in front of the school are surrounded by King Charles Oaks, with the main buildings on the Drive being the Old Collegians’ Pavilion, the Memorial Chapel, the Administration block, the Dining Hall, the Memorial Building and the Great Hall. Other facilities include the Centennial Centre, which houses the Library, a campus-wide computer network, a 12 laboratory science block, Music School, Lecture theatre, Graphics and Media Studies suite, Technology Centre, computer suite, art studios, Careers Centre, two gymnasiums, Fitness Centre, two squash courts, ten tennis courts, and a 30 metre heated swimming pool.

The College has its own outdoor pursuits centre at Ahuroa where all Year 9 and 10 students spend at least one week per year under a resident instructor. Year 12 Leadership courses take place in Term 3 and 4 at Ahuroa.

There are three Full Boarding Houses, two Weekly Boarding Houses, four Day Houses and one Year 12-13 girls' House. The House is the key pastoral unit of the school and is staffed by a Housemaster, Tutors and Matron. The College has its own Medical Centre with a full-time Sister. Boarders come largely from throughout the North Island and overseas. A magnificent Chapel is central to the life of the College with services held each school day and Sundays.

The Curriculum
The College has an excellent academic tradition and places major emphasis on the development of well balanced all-rounders, well equipped to play a positive role in New Zealand’s future.

Sporting and Cultural Activities
The College offers a wide range of competitive and non-competitive sporting activities and a full range of extra-curricular activities, especially drama, debating, music and outdoor pursuits.

Scholarship and Bursaries
There are a number of scholarships and bursaries available for those with special academic, musical and all-round ability. These are advertised each year in local and regional newspapers. Please contact the Admissions Director for information.
