The School
Matahui Road School opened in February 1988. Set in beautiful rural surroundings, the school is situated at Aongatete, just 25 minutes north of Tauranga. Its extensive grounds include a soccer field, courts and a large native bush area. The school operates a bus service from Tauranga city and from Paeroa.

Matahui Road School is a Multiple Intelligences school. Teachers subscribe to Howard Gardner’s theory that each child possesses his or her own unique blend of eight different intelligences – Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical, Musical, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Spatial, and Naturalist. Catering for all of these within classroom programmes, allows for students’ different learning styles and opens many different pathways to academic achievement.

The Curriculum
Classroom programmes, which are based on the New Zealand Curriculum Framework, aim to develop:

Personal and Social Growth
We believe children learn best when they feel good about themselves and valued as individuals. To achieve this we have set a maximum average class size of 17, within a maximum school size of 120. This enables teachers to develop an indepth relationship with each child, and a full understanding of his or her social and learning needs. Classroom programmes aim to foster independence, self-confidence and a love of learning.

Academic Excellence
Small class sizes enable teachers to focus on students’ individual academic needs within a challenging and stimulating curriculum. Literacy and numeracy is emphasised as a foundation for the ‘learning how to learn’ skills such as researching, problem-solving, making choices and relating to others. Provision is made for extension and remedial activities. Matahui Road students achieve a consistently high level of success in the annual Australian English, Maths and Science Competitions, as well as in a range of other regional academic events. Students in Years 7 and 8 learn German as a second language.

Creativity
Creative development is given considerable emphasis in classroom programmes. Encouraging children’s creativity expands their intellect and problem-solving ability, and enhances their learning in all fields, as well as enabling them to express themselves more freely.

Education Outside the Classroom
Students are actively involved in their learning through many challenging and meaningful hands-on learning experiences. Outdoor education is seen as a vital and stimulating part of the school programme. From Year 5, students enjoy two exciting school camps each year, where they are introduced to the physical challenges and dangers of the environment, and the skills for coping with them.

Sporting and Cultural Activities
Art and music, provided by specialist teachers, is accorded a special place in the curriculum. All children from Year 3 learn recorder and marimba. Our marimba bands are regularly invited to play in the community. Every student takes part in our biennial productions.

A strong sporting culture has developed. Students have the opportunity to play basketball, netball and soccer in winter, and volleyball in summer. The school is part of the local Combined Rural School’s Cluster, which holds annual events in athletics, cross-country and swimming.
