Foundation

Pinehurst was founded in 1991 in Albany.

The School

Pinehurst is situated on 20 acres of land which stands adjacent to the Oteha escarpment in Bush Road, Albany. It is bordered by a native bush reserve and the Alexandra Stream. The school commenced the 2006 year with 34 classrooms, an Information Centre, an Art, Music and Drama facility, a Senior School Science and Technology facility, and a full-sized gymnasium to serve its 790 students and 73 teaching staff.

Pinehurst’s growth from a roll of 35 pupils to its present levels of 790 testifies to the demand for an independent education. The school draws its students from a wide range of backgrounds and catchments throughout the north and northwest of Auckland.

The Pinehurst philosophy holds that a bond between family and school will achieve the best education for children, and that positive interaction between children, teachers and parents is paramount to the effectiveness of the school. Each child is treated as an individual. Progress is carefully evaluated and discussed with parents every term. Students are encouraged to set learning goals and progress at their own pace with no upper limits to their achievement.

Pinehurst pursues the highest possible educational standards. The school culture promotes self-esteem, pride in individual and collective achievement, and respect for each other. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own actions.

The Curriculum

Our motto proposes that our pupils be “proud of who they are, what they know and what they can achieve”. Our class size has an upper limit of 25 children per class.

Pinehurst is a Cambridge International Fellowship Centre, an honour bestowed on less than 1% of the 6000 Cambridge centres internationally.

The New Zealand Curriculum Framework forms the basis of the educational programme; however, Pinehurst has recently become the first New Zealand school to teach the Cambridge Curriculum in the Primary, Junior College and Senior College.  No students within Pinehurst are required to sit NCEA. College students are taught the Cambridge International Curriculum to enable them to sit for the IGCSE, A/S and A level examinations.

Pinehurst has agreed to observe and be bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International students published by the Ministry of Education. Before international students are able to study mainstream subjects they may be required to undergo six to nine months of intensive language tuition in our Reception class program.

Pinehurst children use the wide variety of community facilities available in the East Coast Bays and Albany area in addition to the range of on-site school facilities.

A wide range of sporting, entrepreneurial and cultural opportunities are offered at all levels in the school.
