Foundation
Rangi Ruru was founded in 1889 with a roll of 18 pupils by Miss Helen Gibson. In 1946 the school was purchased by a board of governors under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church. The affiliation with the Presbyterian Church continues, although the school today has a diverse staff and student body, from a wide range of denominations and ethnicities.

The School
Rangi Ruru is consistently one of New Zealand's top performing schools, both academically and in a wide range of sports, cultural and creative pursuits.  Underpinning everything are the school's values of respect, aroha, endeavour and enthusiasm, generosity of spirity and integrity.

The school is committed to providing the very best education, equipping girls with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for the next step and beyond; with the attitude and dispositions to make things happen for them; and with a strong set of values to guide them to make good decisions.

A strong pastoral, mentoring and support network operates in the school.  As well as support from their teachers, tutors and peers, girls can access a wide range of additional pastoral support from their Year Level Dean, the School Chaplain and guidance counsellor.

Rangi Ruru has excellent facilities and technology.  The school is a front runner in education technology and has a reputation for being innovative.  Rangi Ruru was the first school in New Zealand to initiate the Artist in Residence programme, the first school to go on the internet, and is an extensive user of technology to support learning and collaboration in and outside the classroom.

The school's modern onsite boarding house caters for around 120 boarders from Years 9 to 13.  Boarding facilities provide an environment where girls are encouraged to develop their life skills in a caring, secure and supportive environment.

The Rangi Ruru Early Education College and Preschool are also sited on the Merivale campus.

The Curriculum
The curriculum caters for a wide breadth of learning experiences. Each student has an Personal Development Plan (PDP) which covers both her curricular and co-curricular personal goals.  Each student is involved in setting and evaluating her individual goals.  PDPs are developed in discussions between the student, her parents and her form tutor.

Students at Rangi Ruru are streamed into classes of peers of similar ability.  Students who require learning support, or show particular interests, talents or gifts, can receive additional support through subject specialists, GATE support and mentoring staff or the staff of the learning centre.  In order to reach their individual portential, girls may be further challenged through extension, acceleration or multi-leveling.

The school also offers a Christian living programme and encourages girls to become engaged in community service activities.  Values education is central to the school's philosophy.

Sporting and Cultural activities
Rangi Ruru is one of New Zealand's top sports schools.  The school offers over 36 sports codes catering to girls' sporting interests, whether social or competitive.  Our Sports Plus Programme provides additional support to our top sportswomen, particularly our regional and national representatives.

At Rangi there is also a strong interest in dance, drama, speech, choral and instrumental music.  Amongst the options available to students are chorale, barbershop, jazz ensemble, chamger music, orchestra, debating, kapahaka, dance company.  There are many competitions, events and products throughout the year, giving girls opportunities to showcase their talents.

Scholarships and Bursaries
Scholarship examinations are held in June for students entering Year 9 the following year. Scholarships are available for academic and musical ability.  The school also offers a Year 7 scholarship and a boarding scholarship.
