Foundation
The school was founded in 1911 and stands in attractive grounds of 30 acres in the city area. There are 12 acres of playing fields and areas of both exotic and native bush.

The School
Southwell is administered by a Trust Board. It is affiliated with the Anglican Church and chapel services are regular and obligatory. There is a robed chapel choir.

Buildings comprise All Hallows Chapel, dining hall, dormitory and administration block, theatre, performing arts centre, music centre, gymnasium, learning centre, arts centre, classroom blocks, swimming pool and tennis courts and hockey turf.

The boarding is organised and administered by the Housemaster, Housemothers and House Tutors and teaching staff share in supervisory duties during the week and weekends. The Headmaster and the Chaplain are in close contact with the boarders.

The Curriculum
The syllabus offers eight years of education beginning with students aged five years. All classes, of 25 or less, receive religious instruction and specialist music teaching. Second languages are taught to classes from Year 7. Years 7 and 8 classes also receive courses in Technology. Homework is done each evening. There is a fully qualified staff of 50 teachers, the Chaplain and 12 specialist teachers.

Sport and Cultural Activities
The school is known for the variety and excellence of its musical and theatrical productions. There is a Music Director and part-time teachers. Sports are compulsory and are coached by all staff. In addition to cricket or softball, rugby, netball, soccer, hockey, athletics, cross country running and swimming in which all participate, gymnastics, volleyball and tennis are taught to the majority of students.

Boarding
Boarding is available for both boys and girls with separate bunks for up to eight in each squad. Students from the age of nine can board with the flexibility to stay Monday to Friday or full-time boarding.
