Foundation
St Michael’s School was founded in 1851 and is situated in the centre of the city on the site of the first church of Christchurch. The School celebrated its Sesquicentenary, as the first founded Christchurch school, in 2001.

The School
St Michael’s is an Anglican School of the parish of Christchurch, St Michael and All Angels. Pupils come from a wide range of backgrounds and our vision is for the students in our care to receive "quality education at our central city site".

The school provides a rich variety of educational experiences to develop the whole child. There is one class at each of the eight year levels and strong programmes for the nurturing of leadership and mentoring skills amongst our pupils. Our inner city location enables us to take advantage of a number of cultural and educational venues in the near vicinity.

The Curriculum
The New Zealand curriculum is used throughout the school with some adaptations and added value to meet our needs and expectations. The Ti Kanga and Te Reo Maori programme is an important feature of the School.

Close communication with parents is maintained through regular effort assessments, twice-yearly reports, monthly newsletters and parent/teacher interviews. Emphasis is placed in the development and acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to fit into society, lead to successful future learning and equip them for the needs of a changing world.

Parents take an active interest in school activities and the School encourages parental involvement at any event.

An After-School Homework Centre provides essential and structured childcare for a number of our working parents.

Cultural Activities
St Michael’s is musically rich. Cultural activities play an important part in the School curriculum and there is emphasis on Music, Art and Drama. Pupils are encouraged to audition for the Chapel or School Choir, which prepares for participation in the Christchurch Music Festival. Pupils learn the recorder and many students receive musical tuition on various instruments to enable them to play with a most competent School Orchestra. All pupils participate in the biennial concert or production. New Art and Music facilities will ensure the further endorsement of our pupils’ cultural development.

Sporting Pursuits
Pupils pursue athletics, cross country and swimming competitions in the four school houses. Regular coaching and fixtures, with other independent schools, occurs for our pupils in the Summer codes: cricket, softball and tennis and in the Winter codes: hockey, netball and soccer.

Spiritual
All pupils participate in daily devotions, Christian studies and School services, lead by the School Chaplain.
