Foundation
St Paul’s was founded in 1959 by a group who had decided that the Waikato needed its own Anglican independent school to serve the rural community and the rapidly growing city of Hamilton.

The School
School life is based around the four main strands, that of academic focus, sporting involvement and achievement, cultural participation and the spiritual dimension.

A special feature of the school is the Tihoi Venture School which was set up by the Trustees and Mr A D Hart (past Headmaster) in 1979. Year10 boys spend six months at Tihoi studying the core curriculum and being involved in outdoor pursuits.

The school is divided into eight houses, three boys’ boarding and four day boy houses, as well as Harington boarding and day houses for the Year 12 and Year 13 girls.

The school is set in 48 acres in suburban Hamilton and comprises modern classrooms, a computerised library, new student centre, impressive computer facilities, a modern chapel and all-weather sports surface. The school also owns a rowing shed on the Waikato River, a substantial forestry area at Honokiwi and 30 acres of the former mining town at Tihoi.

The Curriculum
A wide range of subjects are studied by all Year 9 students on entry. Later, students branch into subject options and these cover generous choices allowing them to take a range of academic subjects (physics, chemistry, etc), along with technical subjects (workshop technology, technical drawing) in Year 11. Wide choices are also offered at Year 12 and 13 Levels.

Sporting and Cultural Activities
All major sports are offered at the school, although entry to some is restricted by staff availability and facilities. The main activities in summer are rowing, cricket, tennis, athletics, swimming and yachting. Winter sports include rugby, soccer, hockey, harriers, badminton, squash, table tennis, netball and cycling. Another sport that is available year round is chess.

Scholarships and Bursaries
Two scholarships are awarded to Year 9 boys through the entrance scholarship examination sat in the May preceding their entry. For information on other scholarships and bursaries please apply to the Headmaster.
