Foundation
The school was established in 1881 by the Chapter of Christchurch Cathedral for the education of choristers, which remains an important function of the school. Early this century, the school became the lower school of Christ’s College for a period.

In term one of 1995, the school offered even wider educational opportunities when it opened a Preparatory School for Girls. In all respects, the girls’ department is regarded in the same way as the boy’s department but each operates separately.

The School
The school is situated adjacent to the central city area, bounded by the river Avon and 162 hectares of Hagley Park. It is within a few minutes walk of the Canterbury Public Library and the Botanic Gardens.

Facilities within the school include a chapel, modern classroom blocks, an art room, a science laboratory, a library and computer suite, a music room, studios for instrumental tuition and a gymnasium.

The school has an outstanding tradition in academic achievement, choral and instrumental music and sport.

The school ethos encourages a warm, positive, family atmosphere, where the individual receives care and encouragement and where the talents of each student are identified and developed.

The Curriculum
There is a strong emphasis on the basic areas of the curriculum but there is also a team of specialist teachers in music, drama, French, Spanish, Latin, art and craft, science, remedial reading and physical education.

The school keeps abreast of current developments in education by providing programmes in technology, and incorporating the best from modern research into teaching methods and learning patterns.

Music of the highest standard has always been a hallmark of the school.

Sport and Cultural Activities
Pupils are required to participate in winter and summer games, as well as in a variety of cultural activities. While the daily routine of the girl’s department and the boy’s department are programmed independently, the two schools combine to share some activities. These include a weekly assembly, the school orchestra, the annual Prize Giving and the annual Carol Service and Founder’s Day Service.

Scholarships
Twenty four choral scholarships are available to boys accepted into the Cathedral Choir up to the value of full tuition fees. Some academic scholarships are available for students entering the Preparatory Schools. Enquiries about these scholarships should be addressed to the Headmaster.
