Foundation
The school was founded in 1854 on land granted by Sir George Grey, Governor of New Zealand, to Bishop Selwyn.

The School
Wanganui Collegiate School, as New Zealand’s premier seven day a week secondary boarding school, is organised into four boarding houses for boys, (day and boarder) and two girl’s houses (day and boarder). The 25 hectares of carefully planned and developed grounds include the school chapel, a gymnasium and the Prince Edward Auditorium capable of seating up to 650. In addition, it has its own rowing shed on the Wanganui River and a lease on land adjacent to a lake close to Wanganui where a sailing shed is located. The complete refurbishment of the main teaching block was completed in 1991, and a new music school was opened in the same year. 1994 saw the opening of the new Izard Sports Centre. An Art and Technology facility is planned for the near future.

The aim of the school is to offer a broad education, based on firm Christian principles, so that all students may realise their full intellectual, physical, cultural and spiritual potential and eventually take their place in the community, aware of its needs and eager to make their contribution to its welfare.

The Curriculum
Excellent academic facilities exist and the broad range of subjects offered is designed to satisfy the great majority of students at all levels. Academic progress is assessed in termly assessment meetings in addition to termly reports which also include reports on progress in games, recreational activities and character development. Interest and involvement beyond the school is fostered by organised programmes of community work and participation in venture camps. The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is widely supported by students of all ages.

Sporting and Cultural Activities
Constructive use of leisure time by the encouragement of co and extra-curricular activities is an important part of the school’s philosophy. There are eight rugby fields, two soccer pitches for the winter, as well as eight cricket wickets, an athletics track, six tennis courts and a swimming pool for summer activity. Rowing and sailing take place at the school’s facilities based off the main campus and extensive use is made of the nearby all-weather hockey pitch, indoor pool and sports stadium.

Scholarships and Bursaries
For students entering Year 9, a range of scholarships and bursaries are offered. Many are awarded on the basis of examinations held in the preceding June. The awards cover the full or partial cost of tuition fees.

There are music scholarships available for both boys and girls. These are based on audition and cover partial academic tuition fees.
