Foundation
The school was founded in 1914 and was formerly situated on the Terrace, Wellington. In 1940 it moved to Days Bay and incorporated Croydon School. Wellesley occupies a magnificent site on the shoreline of Days Bay. Behind the school is a large area of native bush. The buildings stand in five acres with additional playing fields adjoining them.

The School
Architecturally, the school is an interesting mixture of old and modern. The original wooden building, a feature of Days Bay, houses the Beatson Library, senior classrooms, a large resource room, staff room, medical room, kitchen and administration rooms. The middle school (Years 4-6) is housed in a new building due for completion in May 2005. The junior school is housed in a spacious new building that was refurbished early in 2003.

Recent additions to the school have included new classrooms, comprehensive facilities catering for science and technology, music and the performing arts and the visual arts. The large assembly hall contains a chapel annexe.

Wellesley is one of New Zealand’s oldest schools and carries with it certain traditions but interestingly enough is known for its innovative and progressive educational practices. At Wellesley we believe that our future lies in our ability to embrace the new, to encourage fresh thinking, to support the individual and to keep our minds open to new ideas and opportunities ahead. The school’s holistic philosophy supports the boys’ full range of needs: academic, emotional, cultural, physical and spiritual. Children are encouraged to think and higher level thinking skills are taught. Self-discipline and trust are fostered and all pupils are encouraged to be responsible for their actions. Part of educating for the future requires us to equip the boys with attitudes, knowledge, understandings and skills they will need to be life-long learners.

The Curriculum
The dynamic interactive curriculum includes the basic subject areas with an emphasis on upgrading children’s thinking. The school is highly regarded for the work fostered in the field of creative – movement, art, craft and drama. Religious education is included. The Christian ethic is important.

Physical fitness and the development of skills are encouraged. There is a regular, structured PE programme and boys have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports and to enjoy Wellesley’s unique setting between the bush and sea.

In addition to class teachers, the school also employs a teacher/librarian, a literacy support teacher, a teacher who caters for children with special abilities as well as the co-ordination of our thinking skills programme and a specialist teacher in information technology. The arts are supported by specialist teachers in the performing and visual arts.

Application Fee

An application fee of $75 for each student is payable at the time application is made for a vacancy.

Enrolment Fee

During the year prior to the boy starting at Wellesley, a fee of $250 for enrolment is payable in respect of each boy. This fee is not refundable and will be used to defray the costs of maintaining contact when the boy has left the school.

Activity Fee (GST inclusive, per term)

Years 1–7 $50 per student

Year 8 $100 per student

This fee is designed to cover basic stationery, workshops, recitals and various school trips. It does not cover the cost of camps, special activities or extended trips which will be charged on an individual basis. The Year 8 Activity Fee includes the cost of the year end dinner, Year 8 book and CD.

Parents’ Association Levy

$10 per family per term.
