Service to Music and the Performing Arts

Julia has served as Director of Music at Southwell School for six years. In this time, she has hugely enhanced the quality of music created and performed at Southwell, transforming classroom music programmes and raising the profile and standard of extracurricular music groups and the Chapel Choirs.

Southwell students’ success in Trinity music exams and local and regional contests is second to none, and the boys’ and girls’ Chapel Choirs are recognised regionally and nationally. Numbers applying for the choir have increased year after year under Julia’s leadership. Student participation in external music exams and performance groups has also increased.

Julia has produced a world class music programme, and each year she provides wonderful opportunities to all students. She also serves the wider community, organising a Senior Citizens Concert, Christmas Carol Services and a Children’s Special Christmas Party that reach beyond the school’s gates into the wider community.

Headmaster Jason Speedy says, “Julia is one of New Zealand’s finest music teachers and leaders. She sets high expectations, is thoroughly organised, and her positive personality and love of music provide an infectious cultivation of music into our students, staff, and the Southwell community.”

Teacher Dr Greg Neil adds, “Julia is a critical cog in the Southwell machine – the contribution she makes to cultural life is immeasurable.”

Congratulations Julia.
