Service to the Boarding Sector
When Julie became Director of Boarding in 2008, her predecessor had only stayed a year, meaning there were heightened expectations and people were unsettled and critical. Julie quickly settled the community, and by inspiring trust and confidence she grew the boarding roll at a time when national numbers were declining.
Julie has introduced many initiatives, including mixing older and younger students for ‘family’ dinners on Mondays; working with caterers on an appetizing menu for girls from different cultures; and ensuring the festivals of the many ethnicities in the Boarding House are celebrated.
She takes a holistic approach, acting immediately if a student isn’t happy, and works alongside the wellbeing network to ensure students get the support they need. She is Deputy Chair of the New Zealand Boarding Schools Association and offers support to other schools.
Julie has experience of high-performance sport at a national and international level, and has transferred skills from her sports involvement to her work with teenagers. St Cuthbert’s boarders perform above expectations and include many academic prize winners and duxes.
Principal Justine Mahon says, “Julie is an outstanding Director of Boarding, held in high esteem by staff, students and parents. She works tirelessly to achieve the best outcomes for students and has built a lifetime of wonderful memories for those to whom school was also home.”
