Service to Chemistry and Senior Management

Lawrence has been working for ACG since 2001, and has been Deputy Principal at ACG Sunderland for 10 years. His teaching area is Chemistry, but this year after the resignation of a Computer Science teacher, he agreed to teach the IGCSE and AS Computer Science class, because, in his words, ‘our wonderful, committed students need my support.’

Leaning on work he’d done for his MBA and support from colleagues in other ACG schools, Lawrence delivers outstanding lessons, continually adjusting his pedagogy to improve outcomes. For example, he implemented an online testing system where he can mark and give feedback immediately, then adjust his lessons accordingly.

Lawrence’s classes are interesting and accessible, with plenty of differentiated material so all levels are engaged. In Chemistry, the grades show that average and less able students thrive in his class, as well as the more able students. He teaches via practical work as much as possible, developing skills and confidence.

Lawrence has consistently and selflessly developed excellent teaching and learning resources in Chemistry. He shares these with colleagues across ACG and the Cambridge community, and he pioneered the integration of Cambridge into the New Zealand educational environment.

CEO Clarence van der Wel says, “Lawrence has a tireless dedication to his students. He is an outstanding teacher who brings out the very best in all those he teaches.”

Congratulations Lawrence.
