ACG Tauranga teachers win NZ Vodafone Tui Award

A band featuring two ACG Tauranga music teachers has won the Tui for best Worship Artist for 2017 at the recent NZ Vodafone Music Awards.

‘Curate Music’ features ACG Tauranga music teacher Kelly Hayward (songwriter and keys) and itinerant vocal and guitar teacher Antony Jeffares (songwriter, vocalist and instrumentalist), alongside eight other band members.

This week’s award is the second Tui for the band which formed in 2009, and marks the success of their third album ‘These Eyes’.

Mrs Hayward said that while the band doesn’t set out to win awards, it was nevertheless a privilege to be recognised by the industry.

“It’s a huge honour. We’re just really proud of the album that we made, and this really is the icing on the cake.”

ACG Tauranga Principal Shawn Hutchinson said the school was fortunate to have a number of teachers who are not only fantastic in the classroom, but achieve great things professionally outside of school as well.

“Our students benefit from that hands-on experience, something we see every day in our music programme which is going from strength to strength under the tutelage of Kelly and teachers like Antony.”
