Lachlan Craig

Service to Music

Saint Kentigern College

Lachlan completed his secondary education at Saint Kentigern College and was given the role of Arts Prefect in his final year. His musical abilities were clear from an early age. After leaving Saint Kentigern College he went on to study Music at Auckland University.

Since returning to the College (in some ways he never left), he has made a significant contribution to the Choral music programmes offered at the College. He has developed both 'all-comers' and auditioned choirs, demonstrating a clear passion, expert knowledge and enthusiasm for this area of performing arts. One significant challenge Lachlan has faced is to make Choral singing 'cool' in a secondary school where boys in particular are often less than forthcoming to commit to choirs. He has clearly overcome this challenge as the boys choir 'Menasing' achieved the highest accolade, a gold award at the Big Sing Finale in 2015.

Lachlan teaches both individuals and choral groups. He expects high standards and dedicated commitment from his students. His selection of music is contemporary, engaging and always challenging.

Lachlan is also involved in performing in and directing choirs outside of the College. One of those choirs, which he directs, is the Auckland Youth Choir, which happens to have a number of Saint Kentigern Old Collegians in it plus some current students. At the start of 2016 the Auckland Youth Choir was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York.

Lachlan is a person who is committed to ‘service to others’ helping young men and women be the best they can be musically and wanting New Zealand choirs to be world class.

Lachlan is very highly regarded by his colleagues due to his expertise, service, dedication and commitment. He is a true “Son of Kentigern”.

Lachlan’s success saw him awarded a Choral Directors’ Scholarship to attend a course at Oxford University in late 2015.

Congratulations Lachlan.
