Job Description

Mō te tūranga | About the role
You will take responsibility for leading rehearsals, developing students’ Kapa Haka skills and preparing the rōpū for performances throughout the year.

Key responsibilities include:
• Leading regular Kapa Haka practices throughout Terms 1–4, with Term 1 being the busiest period due to Polyfest preparation.
• Teaching and developing students’ skills in waiata, haka, poi, mōteatea and other Māori performing arts.
• Preparing and leading the roopu for ASB Polyfest, our major performance event of the year.
• Preparing students for internal school events and performances throughout the year.
• Bringing te reo Māori, tikanga and mātauranga Māori to life through rehearsals and performances.
• Building positive relationships with students, parents, whānau and the wider Māori community.
• Creating a positive and inclusive environment where students feel connected, supported and proud to represent Diocesan.
A bracket of waiata and haka has been established by our previous tutor, and new students are currently learning this repertoire as they develop their skills and confidence. This provides a strong starting point for the incoming tutor, while leaving room to introduce new waiata, develop the bracket and bring their own creative direction to the rōpū’s Polyfest campaign.

Rehearsal commitment
We would like practices to run throughout the school year, with lunchtime sessions forming part of the programme alongside additional rehearsals when required.

During Term 1, the successful applicant will need to be available for approximately two to three after-school rehearsals per week and one Saturday rehearsal to support Polyfest preparation. Additional rehearsals and performances may be required at other times of the year to meet school event commitments.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who brings cultural knowledge, performance experience and the ability to lead a successful Kapa Haka programme.
You will ideally have:
• Experience leading or tutoring Kapa Haka in a school, kura or community setting.
• Strong knowledge of tikanga Māori, kawa and te reo Māori.
• The ability to teach and develop students across a range of Kapa Haka disciplines.
• Strong organisational, communication and leadership skills.
• The ability to build genuine relationships with students, parents, whānau and the wider community.
• A collaborative approach and a commitment to fostering cultural pride and belonging.
• A genuine passion for working with rangatahi and helping them reach their potential.
‍

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou | What we offer
• $75 per hour.
• Excellent practice facilities and resources to support the Kapa Haka programme.
• The opportunity to lead and grow our Senior School Kapa Haka rōpū.
• A school community that values mātauranga Māori and cultural identity.
• Access to school facilities, including the gym, pool and landscaped grounds.
• On-site parking when available.
