For the second consecutive year, The Cathedral Grammar School has produced the national winner of the Warriors Community Foundation's League in Libraries Creative Writing Competition, with Year 5 student Sanne Mitchell named the Years 4–6 Supreme Winner from more than 700 entries submitted by students across New Zealand.
The League in Libraries competition is a national literacy initiative that encourages students to develop their creativity through original storytelling inspired by the One New Zealand Warriors.
Sanne's winning story, The Travelling Pōro, follows a Warriors match ball that mysteriously goes missing before embarking on an unforgettable journey around the world before eventually finding its way back to the team. Her creativity, originality and storytelling impressed the judges, earning her the competition's highest honour in the Years 4–6 category.
As the national winner, Sanne will travel to Auckland as a special guest of the One New Zealand Warriors to attend an upcoming home game. She will also have her story professionally published and illustrated, work alongside an editor to further develop her writing, and receive a One New Zealand Warriors jersey.
These achievements reflect Cathedral Grammar's sustained commitment to literacy excellence, with students now winning national literacy titles in three consecutive years - National Literacy Quiz Champions in 2024, followed by national creative writing champions in both 2025 and 2026.
