We're excited to share that the ISNZ Benchmarking Platform is making excellent progress.
Over the upcoming weeks, several of our larger member schools will be providing data that will help us test, refine and validate the platform. Their participation will be invaluable, allowing us to ensure the insights generated are accurate, meaningful and genuinely useful for schools.
What has been particularly encouraging is the willingness of schools to contribute to something that will ultimately benefit the entire independent education community.
Building a Complete Picture
Once this first stage is complete, the next milestone will be to bring more schools onboard.
Our remaining member schools will provide their data by the end of Term 1, 2027. Once that process is complete, we will have a comprehensive picture of the independent school sector for 2026, creating one of the richest and most valuable data sets ever assembled for independent education in New Zealand.
Every school that participates helps strengthen the quality of the information available to all schools. The more complete the data, the more powerful the insights.
Why This Matters
For some time, we've been talking about the growing importance of having better information to support decision-making.
The environment in which schools operate is becoming more complex. Government policies can shift quickly, affordability pressures continue to grow, and expectations from parents, boards and communities are evolving. At the same time, school leaders are expected to make increasingly strategic decisions.
By drawing on aggregated and anonymised information from across the sector, the platform will allow schools to benchmark performance, identify emerging trends, and better understand both opportunities and challenges.
It will help leaders answer important questions such as, how are enrolment patterns changing over time? How do our staffing levels compare with similar schools? What trends are emerging across the sector? Where are risks and opportunities developing? How can we make more informed decisions for the future?
The platform will create a shared intelligence capability that helps schools navigate change with greater confidence.
Stronger Together
While the platform will provide significant value to individual schools, its broader purpose is equally important.
For years, advocacy has often relied on snapshots of information or individual experiences. By bringing together sector-wide data, we will be able to build a much stronger evidence base to support ISNZ's engagement with government, policymakers, the media and the wider community.
Put simply, better data helps us tell our story more effectively.
It allows us to demonstrate the contribution independent schools make to New Zealand education, understand emerging challenges earlier, and advocate more confidently on behalf of our members.
Looking Ahead
The ISNZ Benchmarking Platform is much more than a technology project. It represents an investment in stronger decision-making, more effective advocacy, and a more connected and resilient independent school sector.
We're delighted with the progress made so far and grateful to the schools already contributing to the project. As more schools come onboard and testing continues, we move closer to delivering a powerful new resource for the sector.
We look forward to sharing further updates over the coming months and, with all member data expected by the end of Term 1, 2027, creating a complete picture of our sector for 2026.
