ISNZ Shadowing programme

The inaugural ISNZ Shadowing programme has offered 16 Principals and 16 Assistant / Deputy Principals the chance to connect and share leadership practice and insights across a variety of Independent schools. This is a tangible and powerful way for ISNZ to support leadership development within the ISNZ network.

Once partnered with a Principal of an ISNZ member school the DPs /APs enjoyed a personalised leadership experience. This presented a unique opportunity to observe an experienced Principal in a variety of leadership situations: Board meeting, Strategic planning session, student forum, Fundraising and Donor approaches, Staff appraisal or mentoring sessions, Annual planning and Goal setting review, Parent and community events, Financial planning meetings.

The shadowing framework was designed by Christine Leighton (ISNZ Heads' Circle Facilitator), and guidelines were provided for interactions during the visit and reflective review.

Matching of mentor (Principal) and mentee (AP / DP) considerations included the type of school, experience and geographical region of participants, and special areas of interest of both parties.

"The task of matching participants was a complex jigsaw. However, participants seem pleased with the pairings", says Christine, "I believe the insights and learnings will be significant for both Principals and Senior Managers involved with the programme. Most school visits by mentees have been scheduled during weeks 3-7 of term three, so I am looking forward to seeking feedback from participants in the coming weeks."
