Championing our schools

As we look ahead, Independent Schools New Zealand remains focused on strengthening the voice, visibility, and value of our member schools.

This is an election year, and with it comes both opportunity and responsibility. We will continue our advocacy work with renewed energy, ensuring that the perspectives of independent schools are clearly heard by decision makers across the political spectrum.

Our commitment is twofold. First, we will continue to actively engage with Ministers, MPs, officials, and sector leaders to ensure that policy conversations are informed by a clear and accurate understanding of who we are and what we contribute. It is important we also identify what our needs are and that the government maintains its support for our sector.

We know Independent schools are not a single model or philosophy; they represent a rich diversity of educational approaches, communities, and special character offerings. From faith-based education to innovative pedagogical models, from specialist schools to those serving highly diverse communities, our sector reflects the breadth of educational aspiration in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Second, we will work to deepen public and political understanding of the distinctive strengths of independent education. Across the country, independent schools are designing environments that are responsive, flexible, and student-centred, providing tailored support, smaller learning settings, and adaptive teaching approaches that allow every young person to thrive.

We will also continue to highlight the effectiveness and adaptability of the curriculum delivered in our schools. Independent schools are often at the forefront of innovation, combining strong academic outcomes with wellbeing, character development, and future-focused learning.

Throughout the year, our messaging will be clear, consistent, and evidence-based. By championing the diversity, quality, and contribution of our schools, we aim to ensure that independent education is well understood, well represented, and well positioned for the future.
