Classroom Teacher Position Description

Position Title: Classroom Teacher
Responsible to: Team Leader and Principal
Functional Relationships: Senior Leadership Team, Teaching and Support Staff, Students and Whānau, External Agencies (where appropriate)

Position Purpose
To provide high quality classroom teaching and learning programmes which maximise learning outcomes for all students, in accordance with the school’s vision, values and strategic goals, and in line with the New Zealand Curriculum.

Key Responsibilities and Expected Outcomes
1. Teaching and Learning

  • Plan, implement and evaluate a rich and responsive learning programme.
  • Set high expectations for all learners and differentiate to meet diverse needs.
  • Integrate digital technologies to enhance learning.
  • Use effective pedagogy to engage learners and support progress.

2. Assessment for Learning

  • Use a range of assessment tools and strategies to monitor student achievement.
  • Use data to inform planning and teaching.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date assessment records.

3. Learning Environment

  • Create a positive, inclusive, and safe classroom environment.
  • Establish and maintain respectful relationships with learners.
  • Promote student wellbeing, resilience, and independence.
  • Manage behaviour positively and consistently.

4. Professional Relationships

  • Engage positively with students, colleagues, whānau, and the wider community.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members and contribute to shared planning.
  • Communicate effectively in a range of contexts.

5. Professional Learning

  • Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional learning and development.
  • Reflect on teaching practice and seek feedback to improve performance.
  • Participate in school-wide professional development opportunities.

6. Contribution to School Life

  • Support and contribute to the school’s values, vision, and strategic direction.
  • Participate actively in school events and extra-curricular activities.
  • Undertake duties as required to support the effective running of the school.


Person Specification

Essential Skills and Attributes
- A current New Zealand teacher registration and practising certificate.
- Sound knowledge of the New Zealand Curriculum.
- Commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and culturally responsive practice.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Positive and flexible approach to teamwork and collaboration.
- Willingness to engage with the school’s vision and values.

Desirable
Strengths in specific curriculum areas or leadership experience (where relevant).
