Job Description

Small classes. Big impact.

Waihi School is a co-educational, independent preparatory school set on ten beautiful hectares in rural South Canterbury. With a proud 118-year history, we deliver a values-driven, holistic education that balances academic excellence with outdoor education, sport, the arts, and character development.

We have vacancies for two exceptional classroom teachers to join our growing team at the beginning of the 2026 school year:

  • One Full-Time, Permanent Position
  • One Fixed-Term Maternity Leave Position (2026)

These roles reflect strong roll growth and are a fantastic opportunity to be part of a dynamic and progressive learning environment. You’ll teach small, motivated classes (typically 20 students or fewer) and join a dedicated team committed to nurturing confident, curious, and well-rounded learners.

Why Waihi?

At Waihi, you’re not just taking on a teaching role; you’re becoming part of a small, vibrant community where your work has a visible, lasting impact. Our size means we know our students and families well, and we celebrate successes both big and small.

Teachers here enjoy the time, resources, and support to do their job well, with generous release time and professional development, daily hot lunches, and a wellbeing budget. The school year is punctuated with unique perks, including a mid-term break in Terms 2 and 3 and longer summer holidays, giving you the space to recharge and make the most of life outside the classroom.
Our beautiful rural campus, strong values, and balanced approach to academics, sport, outdoor education, and the arts create a teaching environment that’s both deeply rewarding and genuinely fun.

We offer:
  • Remuneration above the state scale
  • A supportive and collegial environment with a strong sense of fun
  • Generous release time (almost one full day each week) for planning, preparation, and professional growth
  • A week's mid-term break in Term 2 and Term 3
  • A wellbeing budget
  • Morning teas and hot lunches provided daily
  • Longer summer holidays
  • On-site accommodation may be available
  • Excellent professional development opportunities
We’re looking for someone who:
  • Is a registered (or eligible) NZ teacher with primary, intermediate, or secondary experience
  • Brings warmth, flexibility, and energy to their teaching
  • Can build strong relationships with students and colleagues
  • Has a solid foundation in literacy and numeracy or another specialist area
  • Brings additional strengths in sport, outdoor education, music, or cultural activities
  • Values the unique opportunities that come with working in a boarding prep school

You’ll also contribute to the wider life of the school, including co-curricular and pastoral activities, helping to build strong connections with students both in and out of the classroom.
