As we approachthe end of another busy year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on theprogress our independent schools have made.
When people hear ‘independent’ or ‘private’school, many still picture something quite separate from the public system. But 2025 hasshown, more than ever, that our sector is about specialised teaching, innovation, and life-changing opportunities for students whose needs are notalways met in the standard system.
Independentschools educate around four per cent of New Zealand students, yet their impactis far greater. They provide choice, preserve culture and language, and supportlearners ranging from high achievers to those with complex needs. Many werefounded by communities determined to fill gaps and create brighter futures.
This year ISNZ has worked hard to raise awareness of that value. Through proactive media engagement we’ve shared stories that challenge outdated perceptions and highlight the real difference our schools make. A highlight was the ISNZ Conference in Wellington, where educators and leaders gathered to exchangeideas and celebrate innovation. The energy and collaboration on display showedthe strength and unity of our sector.
Looking ahead to next year, ISNZ will place astrong emphasis on showcasing the diverse and innovative ways our schools caterto the specific needs of their communities, highlighting the uniquecontributions they bring to the wider education sector.
Thank you foryour dedication throughout the year. Together, we continue to show thateducation thrives when diversity of provision is embraced.
